Modafinil is a prescription drug in Malaysia classified under Fourth Schedule to the Poisons Act 1952. This means it can be legally obtained with a prescription from a licensed medical practitioner. However, it not controlled substance under the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 — this is an important distinction.
Many Malaysians are confused between”prescription drugs” and & “illegal drugs”. Modafinil is a prescription drug like an antibiotic or blood pressure medication — not an illegal drug or narcotic. It does not cause significant physical addiction and has been approved by the US FDA for clinical use.
